From mid August to mid September 2011 I was fortunate enough to undertake a Graphic Design internship at Cancer Support Scotland. Alongside Lorna Hull, another Graphic Design Intern, our role required us initially to come up with an identity for the charity and establish some kind of continuity throughout all printed materials. This would allow the charity to be instantly recognisable whilst effectively conveying what they do and their important work with anyone who has been affected by cancer, before, throughout and after treatment. Cancer Support Scotland relies completely on donations from the public and receives no funding from the government or NHS. Due to this it is even more important that the charity's printed materials are eye catching and concise.
Our role required us to design a wide range of printed materials including brochures, leaflets, posters, booklets and business cards, to other items such as PowerPoint presentations,Word documents, and forms, at all times ensuring the charity's branding and image was effectively utilized in each item. We were also required to source, liaise and acquire costing from printers, which proved to be invaluable experience and not something Lorna or myself had done before.
The internship gave me the opportunity to work within an office environment, work with others and learn from other colleagues from different backgrounds, with different skills and knowledge. Since my internship I have successfully managed to gain full time employment as a Junior Graphic Designer.
I would greatly recommend taking up an internship at Cancer Support Scotland, whether it be a graphic design role or otherwise. It has been a truly invaluable experience and one which allows you to put your skills to good use whilst contributing to a very worthwhile cause.’

'I volunteered for 2 days per week to work at Cancer Support Scotland office at Gartnavel supporting the fundraising team with the organisation of local events. The staff working at the charity made me feel very welcome and I enjoyed the cameraderie. The team work tirelessly to improve the services offered and are very enthusiastic about the opening of the new premises which will enhance the service tremendously - this is an exciting time for all. I was very impressed with the work carried out by the staff and their magnificent group of volunteers who contribute greatly to the success of the charity. My experience was extremely satisfying and rewarding and I was overly impressed with the support and services which the team provides. I wish them a very successful future, and look forward to visiting the new premises in the future.'
