Help change someone’s life this Christmas

A gift to Cancer Support Scotland really can make a difference to someone affected by cancer. Please read John’s story about how our wellbeing services changed his life.

John’s story: When the unthinkable happens

I’ve been married to Pamela for 15 years, my best pal and amazing Mum to our two boys. With one phone call we went from celebrating Pamela’s 40th birthday to sitting in a hospital room listening to a consultant. Pamela had breast cancer. I was stunned.

What now?

What will I say to the boys? How will I cope? Will my wife survive? I needed to be strong for Pamela so I bottled up my emotions. But I felt so much pressure to show everyone that I was up to the task of being a good dad, husband, friend – and now carer.

Opening up

Cancer Support Scotland offered us free counselling and complementary therapy, a lifeline, helping us through the most difficult time of our lives. My counsellor helped me to deal with the sadness, anger and helplessness I felt after Pamela’s diagnosis. It made me appreciate what is important in life. Like picking out a Christmas tree, playing board games with my sons and holding Pamela’s hands on a New Year’s walk.

Wishing you a merry Christmas from John and family.
