You can make a real difference

What to expect

We appreciate every minute of precious time you can donate. All of our volunteer roles are meaningful and we strive to ensure you see the impact your time is making. As a volunteer, in addition to making a real difference to people affected by cancer, you will meet new people, learn new skills, and have fun!

We are proud to say that Cancer Support Scotland was awarded the Volunteer Friendly Award in 2014 and 2017.

Application

All volunteers are asked to complete an application pack which consists of an application form, self-declaration form, and equalities monitoring form.

Volunteer interview

After we receive your completed application pack you will be invited to meet with our volunteer coordinator and another member of staff for an informal chat about the volunteer role. This is an opportunity to find out more about what is involved and expected from the role and ask any questions you may have.

References

If after interview the role is the right fit for you, we will seek two character references. Please note for some roles we may only require one character reference.

Referees should have known you for at least 6 months and must not be relatives. If you are concerned that you don’t have anyone to provide a reference for you or you are not sure who to suggest, please don’t hesitate to give our volunteer coordinator a call on 0141 337 8199 who will be able to help make suggestions.

PVG

For some roles you may be required to complete a PVG form however you will not need to pay for this.

Induction and training

Once we receive your references and PVG (if applicable) we will invite you into the Calman Centre for your induction. This will consist of a tour of the centre, history of the charity, meeting the team, and a cancer awareness induction. You will then be taken through any relevant training for your role to ensure you have all the information you need to get started. Once you start you will be supported by the volunteer coordinator and your volunteer supervisor.

Our wonderful reception volunteers gave over 1,600 hours of their time last year, providing a much needed warm welcome
