My name is Karen and in 2017 I found a lump on my breast. Although, I was so sure it wasn’t anything to worry about that I went to the doctor’s myself expecting to be told “Don’t worry, its normal”.

Within 3 weeks I had a diagnosis of stage 3 breast cancer.

I turned to Cancer Support Scotland for help.

The stress of the diagnosis was difficult both mentally and physically, I was constantly worried about the impact on my family. However, Cancer Support Scotland were there for me when I needed them.

The Calman Centre was my sanctuary, my visits gave me motivation and encouraged me to get out the house. The amazing aromatherapy massages and counselling sessions I received allowed me to relax my mind and gave me time to focus on my mental wellbeing. The support was vital in helping me cope with the gruelling treatment regime.

I finished my treatment in January 2018 and was so excited to get back to normality.

Unfortunately, the relief was very short lived as a new tumour was found in my other breast. I was absolutely devastated.

My thoughts constantly went back to my first grandson, Adam. He was so young, and we had so many memories to make together.

I truly thought I wouldn’t be there to see him growing up.

During my second round of treatment, I had to isolate away from my friends and family because of the pandemic. I felt so alone and had so many thoughts of giving up, especially with the awful side effects of the chemotherapy.

I returned to Cancer Support Scotland for help.

I met my wonderful volunteer counsellor, Joseph. Counselling provided an outlet to speak openly about my fears. This was essential as I didn’t want to share my worries with my family, I wanted to protect them.

With Joseph I could get everything off my chest without worrying I was upsetting anyone.

Cancer Support Scotland were there when I needed them.

Fortunately, I have now finished my treatment and I’m doing much better!

I can’t wait to spend this Christmas with my precious family.

I still struggle with side effects of treatment and the fear of recurrence will never leave me. However, I consider myself very lucky to have beaten this horrible disease twice.

And to top off the good news, our family welcomed a new addition, baby Lucas! I am beyond grateful that I now get to watch my two lovely grandsons growing up.

Cancer Support Scotland were there for me through the darkest times, but they need your help to continue their important work.

That’s why this year I’m asking you to support their festive appeal, All We Want for Christmas Is You. Your generous donations allow Cancer Support Scotland to reach even more people when they need them most.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.

I hope you and your loved ones have a very Merry Christmas.
